Snow, ice collapse roof

Weight crumbles Taylor Pool building

Zach Lloyd of Taylor Pools stood under a crisp winter sun looking at the remains of the business owned by his in-laws, Chris and Michelle Taylor.

The Taylors have been in the swimming pool business for 38 years. They are estimating they will have to pay several hundred thousand dollars to fix the damage.

The roof of the business on Knight Avenue collapsed early Wednesday, January 22 from the weight of snow and ice brought by Winter Storm Enzo.

Images of the collapse show deep cracks beginning at the top of the building, which move down for what appears to be a few feet. The exterior of the building was seemingly crushed by the snow as parts of the roof in the middle of the building appear to be touching the ground and the majority of its doors are completely caved in.

“It happened right around 4 a.m.,” said Lloyd. “The alarm went off and police contacted the owner. The owners pulled up, got out of their vehicle and heard the cracking start and watched the building fall.

“We’re really thankful and lucky they were not a minute earlier. They probably would’ve walked inside to see what was causing the alarm to go off. God’s timing was good enough to protect them.”

Lloyd said the collapse hasn’t stopped operations.

“Half of our guys are working doing service calls, doing cleaning so we’ll be working on the field side,” Lloyd said. “We’re working on a couple of temporary options as far as retail space, water testing, chemical analysis.”

Taylor Pools, which has been in business for more than 26 years, purchased the building in February of 2024.

“Snow and ice accumulation over-weighted the roof,” said Lloyd. “This is all red iron construction. It was heavy enough to collapse a red iron building.”

As he was speaking, a loud cracking emanated from the debris.

“It shifted a while ago,” Lloyd said. “The ice is melting and alleviating tension.”

Temporary fencing was installed around the building to keep the curious out.

Lloyd said he is optimistic about the future of the business.

“We’re starting over,” he said. “We have no choice but to keep moving forward.”
