Rozier Jr. steps down as county attorney, Adam Craft appointed as new counsel

Long-time county attorney Franklin Rozier Jr. has resigned and Waycross attorney Adam Craft has been appointed as interim county attorney.

Both actions were taken at last Tuesday’s regular monthly commission meeting. The meeting was delayed a week due to the July 4 holiday.

Rozier submitted his resignation which was accepted by the county on a 3-1 vote.

First district commissioner Harold Rozier Jr. abstained from the vote and second district commissioner Graham Raley was not present at the meeting.

“I appreciate the opportunity to serve,” Rozier said.

Rozier has served two stints as county attorney. He served for many years before resigning in 2012 to try for election to the bench as a superior court judge and then later for the State House of Representatives. He returned to his old job as county attorney in 2017.

Rozier has practiced law in Pierce County for decades and served as state court solicitor for 18 years and four terms at state court judge before retiring in 2014.

Rozier said he intends to continue practicing law, but just felt it was time to step down as county attorney.

After accepting Rozier’s resignation, the board voted to appoint Adam Craft of the McGee and Craft Law firm in Waycross as the new interim county attorney.

Craft lives in Blackshear and is a 2006 graduate of Ware County High School. He has been a partner at McGee and Craft since 2020.

County chairman Neal Bennett said the board interviewed Craft and local attorney Laci Gillis for the post before appointing Craft to the job.

There is no timetable for appointing a permanent county attorney.
