Memorial Satilla Health’s Maribel Yohn recently was honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The quarterly award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the exceptional efforts nurses perform every day. The Sunflower Award for non-nursing staff also is awarded on a quarterly basis. Yohn is a Registered Nurse in the hospital’s critical care unit. The Waycross resident has worked for the hospital for 30 years. In a letter of nomination, her co-worker said: “When I think of an extraordinary nurse, I think of Maribel Yohn. She not only goes above and beyond for those that have trusted her to take care of them, but she goes above and beyond for her coworkers as well. She shows up to work early and works tirelessly every minute to make sure everyone around her feels supported. She is truly extraordinary — a daisy that will never wilt.” DAISY is an acronym for Diseases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Foundation was formed in 1999 by the family of Patrick Barnes as a way to honor the nurses who provided quality and compassionate care to Patrick during the final stages of his battle with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). There are more than 2,600 healthcare facilities in all 50 states and 15 other countries committed to honoring nurses with the award.
