Mills re-signs with CFL’s Stampeders

CALGARY, Alberta — Free agent running back Dedrick Mills agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

Mills and the Stampeders reached the agreement Monday, January 20 for the 2025 season.

“We look forward to seeing Dedrick take the next step in his development as a premier back in our league,” said head coach and general manager Dave Dickenson.

The 28-year-old Ware County alum had 163 carries for 923 yards, one touchdown, and 31 catches for 327 yards in 13 games in 2024 setting new career highs in rushing and receiving.

“I’m excited to re-sign with the Stamps and to be back in Calgary because of the relationships I’ve built and the continuous support from the coaches and my teammates which has pushed me as a player,” said Mills. “I’m excited about the opportunity to contribute to the team success as I feel like it’s going to be a great year. I look forward to my continued growth as a person and a player.”

The 5-foot-10, 227-pound native of Waycross made 12 starts during the 2024 season.

Mills, who is entering his fourth season in the CFL, originally signed with Calgary as a free agent January 25, 2022 after he was released by the NFL’s Detroit Lions. He signed with Detroit as an undrafted free agent May 14, 2021 after playing at the University of Nebraska.

In three pre-season games with the Lions, Mills had 13 carries for 62 yards and seven catches for 52 yards. He was released September 2, 2021.

After signing with the Stampeders, Mills had 67 carries for 459 yards, two touchdowns, and 13 catches for 105 yards in six games during the 2022 season. In 2023, he had 142 carries for 802 yards, four touchdowns, 21 catches for 123 yards, and three kick returns for 55 yards in 15 games.

Prior to suiting up with the Cornhuskers, Mills played one season at Georgia Tech following a standout career for the Ware County Gators.

At Tech in 2016, he had 152 carries for 771 yards, 12 touchdowns, two catches for 13 yards, and one touchdown in nine games for the Yellow Jackets. In the 2017 Gator Bowl, Mills had 31 carries for 169 yards and one touchdown in a 33-18 win over Kentucky and was named the Gator Bowl MVP.

Next, he transferred to Gardner City Community College in 2017 finishing with 236 carries for 1,358 yards, 19 touchdowns, three catches for five yards, and one touchdown in 10 games for the Broncbusters.

Mills played two years at Nebraska (2019-20) where he garnered 227 carries for 1,141 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 27 catches for 208 yards in 18 games for the Cornhuskers. He was a Big-Ten Honorable Mention in 2019.
