Winter storm Enzo interrupts schedule; Herons enter, fall out of Top 10 poll
CANEY BAY — Winter storm Enzo nearly wiped out a week of basketball games with Brantley County playing just one of three games scheduled.
The lone matchup came Saturday (January 25) when Region 1-A mage Thomasville made the trek east to Caney Bay. The Lady Herons (13-5 overall, 7-1 region) completed the season sweep of the Lady Bulldogs (8-8, 2-3), losers in three of their last four games, winning 55-32.
Brantley County, winners in eight of its last nine games, notched a 57-53 victory January 10 in Thomasville.
The Herons (13-5, 5-3), winners of four straight garnering a No. 10 ranking in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution Class A Division I Top 10 poll last week, fell 68-63 in the nightcap and dropped from this week’s state rankings. The victory gave Thomasville (10-6, 4-1), losers in three of its previous four games, a season sweep after recording a 60-53 home win in the first matchup.
BCHS had its schedule road affair Tuesday, January 21 at Bacon County postponed. No date has been announced for a makeup.
The Friday, January 24 date in Bearville against Pierce County was also cancelled. It will be made up Saturday, February 8.
Brantley County traveled Tuesday, January 28 to face Jeff Davis. BCHS will host Berrien Friday, January 31 on Senior Night.
Brantley County travels Tuesday, February 4 to Worth County ahead of the seasonending clash with Pierce County.
Lady Herons..................55 Thomasville...................32 The Lady Herons outscored visiting Thomasville 37-14 in the first and third periods en route to the victory.
Brantley County took control early building a double-digit margin in the opening eight minutes at 23-9. The two teams scored seven points apiece in the second stanza with the Lady Herons taking a 30-16 lead into intermission.
BCHS pushed the margin past 20 points during the third quarter outscoring Thomasville 14-5 for a commanding 44-21 lead. Each team scored 11 points in the final period.
Ayaniah Davenport (teamhigh nine rebounds, five steals, assist) led three players in double figures scoring 14 points. Riana Dennard (six steals, two rebounds, assist) followed with 11 points. Abbie Lee (eight rebounds, team-high seven steals, two assists) contributed 10 points.
Kimora Mincey (eight rebounds, assist, steal) and Summer Colley (three steals, two rebounds, two assists) each netted nine points. Julie Carter (teamhigh three assists, rebound, steal) chipped in eight points.
Thomasville ..................68 No. 10 Herons ...............63 Thomasville overcame a three-point deficit entering the final quarter outscoring the Herons by 12 points to get the win.
Brantley County led at the end of the first three periods and was clinging to a 51-48 advantage with eight minutes remaining. The Bulldogs outpointed BCHS 20-12 in the fourth period to escape with the victory.
“This was a tough loss,” said head coach Tripp Herrin. “We lost Tucker (O’Quinn) to an injury just before halftime. I thought the guys rallied and played hard in the second half. Some of our younger guys stepped up and played well.”
The Herons jumped ahead 17--9 by the end of the first period. Thomasville followed with a 2115 scoring advantage in the second quarter to close the deficit to 32-30.
Brantley County added one point to its lead in the third stanza clipping the Bulldogs 1918 for a three-point advantage at 51-48.
Patrick O’Quinn (team-leading nine assists, team-high tying eight rebounds) lead a trio of players in double figures with 18 points. Carson Jacobs (seven rebounds) was next with 14 points. Tucker O’Quinn scored 10 points over the first two periods.
Jayden Simmons (six rebounds) fell a point shy of double figures finishing with nine points. Courtlon Fuller (teamhigh tying eight rebounds) chipped in six points with Kent Thomas adding three points. Elias Esser and Hilton Depratter scored two points and one point respectively.
