Daniel Johnson of Pierce County is Georgia’s Outstanding Peanut Farmer of the Year.
Johnson received the award for District 3 at the 48th annual Georgia Peanut Farm Show and Conference held last week in Tifton.
Johnson is a thirdgeneration farmer and has been farming for 41 years on D.L. Johnson farm. Johnson’s farm started small with 171 acres, and he has built it up to what it is today along with his family. Today, the farm consists of 3,600 acres of peanuts, cotton, tobacco, hay and timber. He has grown peanuts for 21 years and was one of the first farmers in Pierce County to plant peanuts on a large scale.
Currently, Johnson serves as first vice president of Georgia Farm Bureau and chairman of the Georgia Tobacco Commission. Through the years, he served a variety of roles with various agriculture organizations, including president of the Pierce County Farm Bureau and Georgia Young Farmers.
Johnson is a graduate of the Georgia Agri-Leaders Program and a two-time winner of the Sunbelt Ag Expo Georgia Farmer of the Year Award in 2001 and 2007.
He is married to Patricia and they have four children, Lindsey, LeeAnn, Dan, and Daw-son, as well as four grandchildren, with one on the way.
Johnson received a sign to display at his farm and gift cards from Agri Supply and the Georgia Peanut Commission.
The Georgia Peanut Commission presents the Outstanding Georgia Peanut Farmer of the Year award to one farmer in each of the commission’s five districts. This award is designed to honor farmers who have given life-long devotion to peanut farming and who have the passion, diligence, leadership and desire to see that the peanut industry in the state of Georgia continues to represent the highest quality possible.
