Lady Bears struggle in losses to Clinch, Appling

Pierce County suffered through shooting woes in losing at Appling County and to visiting Clinch County over the weekend.

The Lady Bears (2-14 overall, 1-3 Region 3-AA), who have lost three straight and 14 of 15, fell 64-17 Friday, January 17 to the Lady Pirates (11-7, 3-1) in Baxley ending a 16game winning streak in the series.

Appling County last won 44-34 at home during the 2015-16 season. The Lady Bears hold a 263 series advantage dating back to the 2006-07 campaign.

Visiting Clinch County (6-9) followed Saturday, January 18 with a 49-20 victory to complete the season sweep. The Lady Panthers notched a 43-34 victory at home back on December 16. Clinch County has won six straight against the Lady Bears since restarting the series in 2016-17.

PCHS continues its four-game homestand this week. Appling County was scheduled to come in Tuesday, January 21 with Brantley County visiting Friday, January 24.

Appling County .....64 Lady Bears.............17 BAXLEY — A 14-point first quarter advantage by the Lady Pirates was never challenged as they limited PCHS to six points or less in every quarter.

Appling County raced out to a 17-3 lead through the first eight minutes. The Lady Pirates outscored Pierce County 13-6 in the second stanza to grab a 30-9 advantage at intermission.

A 24-2 run during the third period by Appling County extended its margin to 54-11. The Lady Pirates outpointed PCHS 10-6 in the “mercy rule” fourth quarter.

Claire Murray topped the Lady Bears with seven points. Keirsten Jones was next with four points. Layla Chandel, Caren Drew and Saharah Minott chipped in two points apiece.

Pierce County made just four field goals and was 9-of-23 at the free throw line.

Appling County was paced by the game-high 21 points of Keniyah White. Perri Mitchell added 10 points.

Clinch County .......49 Lady Bears ............20 BEARVILLE — Clinch County’s trio of Amariah Deen, Tara Stevens and D’Marreya Magby combined for 40 points lead the Lady Panthers past Pierce County.

Deen scored a gamehigh 18 points while Stevens and Magby accumulated 11 points each.

The Lady Panthers took control early building an 18-3 advantage by the end of the opening stanza. They outscored PCHS 17-10 in the second period to take a 35-13 halftime lead.

Clinch County pushed the margin to 49-15 by the end of the third quarter after outscoring the Lady Bears 14-2. The “mercy rule” fourth period ended with PCHS scoring all five points.

Murray led the Lady Bears with 12 points. Minott netted four points while Azalea Mobley and Drew netted two points each.

PCHS made nine field goals and was 2-of-9 at the charity stripe.
