Bobbie Johnson, Charlissa Culp and Timothy “Timmy” Harris were among those recognized at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. program Saturday night held at the Scott Chapel United Methodist Church in Blackshear.
Johnson was recognized as this year’s grand marshal. A long-time educator teaching in both Patterson and Blackshear prior to retiring, Johnson is a former girls basketball coach. She was also a teacher of the year and spelling bee coordinator.
A native of Telfair County, she was valedictorian of her graduating class at Lee Street High School and captain of her basketball team.
Johnson is active at Lee Street Resource Center, served on the Pierce County Library Board and is a member of the Gardenia Club. She is active at Greater St. James AME Church.
She is married to Melvin Johnson. They have a daughter, Louise Denise Johnson, grandson, Melvin Tyler Johnson and great-grandchild Kiyan Johnson.
Charlissa Culp was named as the business person of the year. Culp is a realtor with Berkshire Hathaway. She has received numerous industry awards, including agent of the year and is consistently ranked as one of the top real estate agents in her field.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Culp graduated with a master’s degree in business administration from Ashford University. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the Georgia and Florida Associations of Realtors, the National Association of Realtors.
Timothy “Timmy” Harris was recognized as the citizen of the year. The son of L.B. And Elzona Harris, he is one of eight children and a 1977 graduate of Blackshear High School. Harris married his high school sweetheart, Cynthia Washington of Patterson. They have two sons, a daughter and two grandchildren.
Harris worked for Champion for 20 years and then worked for West Fraser where he retired.
He is an active member and deacon at Bethel Temple Holiness Church, where he enjoys singing and leading Sunday School.
Harris is also a barber that enjoys serving others by doing grocery shopping, taking people to doctor's appointments and picking up medicines.
