Waycross resident James E. “Jim” Miller is remembering a “most interesting” interview he conducted with late President Jimmy Carter when he was running for governor of Georgia. “He was a gentle-speaking gentleman whose words focused on what he could do for the state of Georgia and all people,” remembered Miller, holding a photo of his encounter with Carter 60plus years ago when the future governor came to Waycross for an appearance at Memorial Stadium. Carter is being remembered throughout the world following his death Sunday, December 29 at age 100. Miller, a retired executive in local radio, has the treasured photo hanging in the music room of his home. The “peanut farmer from Plains” served as Governor of Georgia (1971-75) and narrowly defeated Gerald Ford to win the Presidency (1977-81).
