The Waycross Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site is ready to support the community by providing free preparation for 2024 federal and state tax returns.
The local site, located at 408 Tebeau Street, opens at 9 a.m., Saturday, February 1. Volunteers will provide services from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday during tax season.
Taxpayers with a household income of less than $70,000 per year are eligible for the assistance.
Waycross VITA has been serving Ware and surrounding counties for more than 20 years with the Internal Revenue Service’s VITA program. Site coordinator Carlos Nelson said the certified tax preparers serve more than 200 clients annually.
In 2023, that represented an estimated economic impact of more than $300,000, said Nelson, who’s joined by Ruth McCoy, James Johnson and Barbara King as preparers.
“Our volunteers continue to give their time to support the community,” Nelson said. “All of them have passed tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards, including maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all taxpayer information.”
No appointments are necessary, Nelson said. Clients will be served in the order they arrive.
Participants should have a photo ID and all tax-related documents when they arrive. All tax returns go through a quality review check prior to filing, and they aren’t filed without the final approval of the taxpayer.
