Lady Herons improve season-best win streak to five

Brantley County extended its winnings streak to a seasonhigh five games following the Lady Herons’ Region 1 wins at Thomasville and against visiting Jeff Davis.

BCHS (10-4 overall, 4-0 region) escaped Friday, January 10 against the Lady Bulldogs (75, 1-1) notching a 57-53 decision. Thomasville had won six of its last seven games entering the matchup.

Brantley County followed Saturday, January 11 with a 4711 whipping of the Lady Yellow Jackets (6-7, 1-2). The 11 points was a season-best for the Lady Herons and a season-low for Jeff Davis.

The Lady Herons have a three-game slate of region action this week. Brantley County traveled Tuesday (January 14) to Nashville to face Berrien (113, 0-3), losers of eight straight. Fitzgerald (3-7, 1-2) visits Friday, January 17. Second-place Worth County (5-7, 3-0) comes to town Saturday, January 18.

BCHS goes Tuesday, January 21 to Bacon County (7-4, 0-2) and Friday, January 24 to Pierce County (2-12).

Lady Herons..................57 Thomasville ..................53 THOMASVILLE — An 11point halftime advantage for the Lady Herons was just enough to hold off the second-half rally of Thomasville.

Brantley County opened the game holding a 15-10 lead after one period. The Lady Herons outpointed Thomasville 18-12 in the second stanza to carry a 33-22 lead into halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs began chipping away at the deficit in the third quarter outscoring Brantley County 16-13 to trail 46-38. Thomasville cut four more points off the margin by the end of the fourth period outpointing the Lady Herons 15-11.

Riana Dennard (three rebounds, two steals) led nine players in the scoring column with 11 points. Kirsten Smith (three steals, two rebounds), Ayaniah Davenport (team-high 12 rebounds, team-high five steals, two assists) and Summer Colley (five rebounds) scored nine points apiece.

Ella Highsmith (four rebounds, three assists, two steals) followed with five points. Kimora Mincey (team-high four assists, three rebounds, steal), Abbie Lee (four rebounds, steal) and Julie Carter (five rebounds, three assists, steal) contributed four points each. Tamiyah Coley (rebound, assist, steal) chipped in two points.

Lady Herons..................47 Jeff Davis .......................11 CANEY BAY — Brantley County held the Lady Yellow Jackets to three points or less in all four quarters in claiming the victory.

Jeff Davis scored three points in each of three quarters and two points in another.

The Lady Herons set the tone for the night with a dominating 14-3 scoring advantage in the first period. Both teams matched their opening act in the second quarter with BCHS’s 14-3 run to take a comfortable 28-6 advantage at intermission.

With the scoring pace slowed, Brantley County outpointed the Lady Yellow Jackets 8-2 in the third stanza building a 36-8 lead. BCHS finished the game outscoring Jeff Davis 11-3.

The Lady Herons had 10 players reach the scoring column led by Mincey (seven rebounds, steal) and Lee (team-high tying eight rebounds, team-high three assists, steal) with eight points each.

Dennard (team-leading four steals, rebound) and Carter (three rebounds, assist, steal) were next with seven points apiece. Davenport (team-high tying eight rebounds, two steals, assist) followed with six points.

Colley (four rebounds, teamleading three assists, steal) netted four points. Highsmith (six rebounds, steal), Edie Lowther (rebound) and Rachel Kennedy (rebound) each scored two points. Coley (three rebounds, two steals) netted a free throw.
