Retired educator and community leader Bobbie Johnson will be this year’s grand marshal for Pierce County’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day observances.
Johnson will be among those honored at the annual MLK program at 5 p.m. Saturday, January 18. The program will be held at the Scott Chapel Methodist Church, 420 Highway Avenue South, Blackshear.
Annual awards winners also include Charlissa Culp as business of the year and Timothy “Timmy’ Hearris as the citizen of the year.
Elder Michael David will be the guest speaker for the program.
The parade will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 20 and Johnson will lead the annual procession.
The parade will assemble at 9 a.m. at the Board of Education Central Office on Main Street. Parade organizer Isaac Moses reminds participants to come early for line up.
“We are asking all participants to be at the BOE for line up at 9 a.m. so that we can be ready to start on time,” he said.
The parade will travel down Main Street to the Courthouse and then turn left on to U.S. Highway 84. The parade will travel down Highway 84 and turn right on Ware Street and will disband at the Lee Street Resource Center.
“We encourage everyone to come out and participate in the MLK observances,” said Moses.
The parade is always held on the Monday of the federal holiday celebrating MLK’s birthday.
