Jayvee Bears record two wins in three games

The Pierce County junior varsity Bears sandwiched a pair of road wins around a home loss to start the second half of the season.

The Bears notched a 59-31 road victory Friday, January 3 at Tattnall County. They followed with a 46-37 home loss Saturday, January 4 to visiting Wayne County wrapping up the first weekend of January.

PCHS then rolled to a 71-34 victory Tuesday, January 7 over Cook.

Bears .................................59 Tattnall County ..................31 Four players reached double figures and the Bears used a 47-17 scoring advantage in the first and third periods for the win.

PCHS jetted to a 23-4 first quarter lead and took a 33-14 advantage into intermission. The Bears outscored Tattnall County 24-13 in the third period to build a 57-27 lead bringing on the “mercy rule” for the final stanza.

Jemil Strickland led PCHS with 18 points. Mershon Stafford followed with 14 points. Kendrick Benson and Gihad Taylor contributed 11 points apiece. Dillon Johnson and Kenny Mackey finished with three points and two points respectively.

Wayne County...................46 Bears .................................37 BEARVILLE — The Yellow Jackets outscored Pierce County by 10 points in the third period to pull away for the win.

Wayne County led 11-7 after one quarter with the Bears battling back to forge a 16-all tie at halftime.

The visitors outscored PCHS 188 in the third quarter to build a 3424 lead. Pierce County outpointed the Yellow Jackets 13-12 in the final period.

Stafford was the lone double-figure scorer for the Bears finishing with 19 points. Benson was next with eight points with Strickland adding seven. Trey Clarke netted two points with Johnson canning a free throw.

Bears......................71 Cook......................34 ADEL — PCHS exploded for 47 points in the first half to build a 25-point cushion en route to beating the overmatched Hornets.

The Bears built a 22-10 lead by the end of the opening period. They used a 25-12 scoring advantage in the second stanza to open up a 47-22 lead at intermission.

PCHS added 10 points to its margin outscoring the Hornets 19-9 in the third quarter to take a 66-31 lead. Pierce County outpointed the home team 5-3 in the “mercy rule” fourth period.

Stafford led 10 players in the scoring column finishing with a gamehigh 24 points. Rhyheim Broadhead was next with 16 points with Strickland netting 14 points.

Amir McKenzie and Benson were next with five points and four points respectively. Johnson contributed three points. K.D. Sharpe, Clarke and Mackey each scored two points while Taylor Thrift netted a free throw.
