Lady Herons open region play 2-0

BCHS knocks off Fitzgerald and Bacon County

Brantley County stretched its winning streak to three games with a sweep of weekend action to begin the new year.

The Lady Herons (8-4 overall, 20 Region 1-A) escaped Friday night, January 3 in Fitzgerald with a 45-41 victory.

A night later at home, Brantley County knocked off visiting Bacon County 48-33. The victory was the fourth straight over the Lady Red Raiders following a four-game losing streak in the series.

The Lady Herons are 7-4 against Bacon County dating back to 201213. The two schools did not play from 2012-13 through the 2018-19 seasons.

Brantley County resumes region play Friday, January 10 at Thomasville. Region foe Jeff Davis visits Saturday, January 11.

Brantley County continues is region slate Tuesday, January 14 at Berrien. Fitzgerald (Friday, January 17) and Worth County (Saturday, January 18) follow on the schedule with trips to Caney Bay.

FITZGERALD — Brantley County outscored the Lady Purple Hurricane by eight points in the even quarters after being outscored by four points in the odd quarters to notch the win.

Fitzgerald claimed an 8-7 lead after the first period. The Lady Herons outscored the home team 14-8 in the second stanza to take a 21-16 lead to the locker room.

The Lady Purple Hurricane outpointed BCHS 13-10 in the third quarter to get to within 31-29. Brantley County held on outscoring Fitzgerald 14-12 over the final eight minutes.

Summer Colley (two rebounds) paced the Lady Herons with 13 points. Ayaniah Davenport (seven rebounds, two steals) also reached double figures with 11 points.

Tamiyah Coley (two assists, steal) was next with six points. Kimora Mincey (team-high nine rebounds, steal), Julie Carter (four rebounds, two assists, steal) and Ella Highsmith (five rebounds) each bagged four points. Riana Dennard (four assists, two rebounds) added three points.

CANEY BAY — The Lady Herons pulled away from a two-point lead entering the final eight minutes outscoring Bacon County by 13 points to garner the victory.

Brantley County led just 29-27 through three quarters. A 19-6 surge by the Lady Herons kept Bacon County at bay.

BCHS doubled up the Lady Red Raiders 10-5 in the opening stanza. A 10-9 scoring advantage in the second period gave the Lady Herons a 20-14 halftime lead.

Bacon County outpointed the Lady Herons 13-9 in the third quarter to close the deficit to 29-27.

Coley (two rebounds, two steals) led a balanced BCHS scoring attack with nine points. Abbie Lee (teamhigh tying eight rebounds, two steals) followed with eight points.

Kirsten Smith, Dennard (teamleading four steals, two rebounds, two assists), Colley (three assists, rebound), Highsmith (four rebounds, two steals) contributed six points apiece.

Carter (three steals) finished with five points. Mincey (team-high tying eight rebounds, three steals, two assists) and Davenport (four rebounds, three steals, assist) each bagged a free throw.
