Dr. Lynn Barber experienced at a young age the impact the late Denton Dial had on education in Ware County.

The Ware County Schools Superintendent, was one of Dial’s fifth grade students at Manor Elementary School.

“Mr. Dial was a true champion of students and an advocate for public education,” Dr. Barber said of Dial, who was Chairman of the Ware County Board of Education at his death. “I remember his classroom fondly due to the positive climate he helped to make.”

Dial, 68, died suddenly Saturday, December 28, 2024 at Memorial Satilla Health. His funeral service, at which members of the Ware Board of Education were honorary pallbearers, was Wednesday, January 1.

Dr. Barber and Dial’s board colleagues each pointed to his time in the classroom and as a principal as central to his work as District 5 representative since 2011 and board chair the past two years.

“He was relatable and approachable, and always one who encouraged his students,” said the superintendent. “These same traits served him well as he moved into administration. His experience as a teacher and leader was a definite asset as he served on the board of education and as he led as board chair.

“Every decision made was done with Ware County’s students and staff at the core.”

Vice Chairman Barry Deas echoed Dr. Barber’s comments.

“From the start of Denton’s career as an educator, he set his standards high,” Deas said. “He strived to do his best as a teacher and expected his students to do the same. Denton taught the subject matter with dedication and vigor, but he also taught life skills to his students, knowing how important both would be for their success.

“As a board member he relied on that experience to make decisions that would affect students and staff — especially principals. He was always quoted as saying, “It’s the PRINCIPAL (principle) of the thing.”

Added Rusty Ganas: “I will remember Denton as a man true to his Christian beliefs and to his professional calling. His decisions as a board member were always made based on the best interest of the students and staff. He will be missed as a kind gentleman and as an experienced professional.”

Longtime board member Buster Tyre also pointed to Denton’s faith and concern for others. Dial was a member and deacon at Kettle Creek Church.

“Denton loved the Lord, his family and the Ware County school system,” Tyre said. “He’ll be very much missed. He was not only a good friend but he was a good person.”

Board member Toni Nelson recalled a lighter side of Dial which often livened meetings.

“He will truly be missed for all his stories about being a principal at Waresboro and his various roles within the Ware County School System,” she said. “He was a true Gators fan.”

Dial was raised in Manor, and graduated from Ware County High School in 1974. He received his education specialist degree in Administrative Supervision from Valdosta State University.

After teaching at Manor Elementary, Dial served as assistant principal at Ware County Junior High School, principal at Emerson Park and Williams Heights Elementary Schools, respectively. He served as principal of Waresboro Elementary School in 2009.

The board met earlier this week to discuss filling the District 5 seat. Dr. Barber said Monday, January 6 state law says if the vacancy occurs after the midpoint of the term, then board members shall appoint someone to fill the seat for the remainder of the term, which for District 5 is December 31, 2026.

The next election for the seat will be the General Primary in the spring of 2026.

“He certainly leaves big shoes to fill,” Dr. Barber said.
