Pierce County Commission Highlights

(The Pierce County Board of Commissioners discussed and/or voted on the following during a called meeting Monday, December 23. ) Raises for Volunteer Firemen: Commissioners approved raising the pay of volunteer firemen from $15 to $20 per call.

New property insurance and liability coverage: The board approved the purchase of new property liability insurance coverage from the Association County Commissioners of Georgia in the amount of $352,692 for the year. The only other bidder was from the county’s current provider, Gallagher, in the amount of $550,000.

Uncollectable taxes: The commission approved forgiving almost $68,000 in uncollectable taxes. The amount written off includes $61,446 in property taxes and $3,338 in mobile home taxes.

Appraisal services: Board members approved a contract with Deen’s LLC for appraisal services and staff support to the Board of Assessors. Deen’s will be paid $37,680 annually and will handle the county’s personal property research and verifications. Commissioners also approved contracting with Mobile Assessors in the initial amount of $21,946 and an annual contract of $4,462. Mobile Assessors software allows tax records to be updated in the field and will help streamline the work of the property appraisers.

Next meeting: The next regular commission meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the Southeast Georgia Regional Agriculture Center.
