Martinez top 5 finalist for Student Production Awards

Pierce County High School alumna Hannia Martinez recently finished as a top-five national finalist for Talent Performer at the recent 2024 Student Production (SPA) Awards hosted by the The Foundation of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS).

Martinez, currently studying interior design at the University of Alabama, represented the Southeast NATAS chapter as champion of that five-state region (Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, and part of North Carolina). Martinez was nominated at the regional level for her role as Imogen, an interdimensional traveling scientist in the sci-fi film “278”, written by Aryn Broadnax. The film was directed by Whitney King and co-starred Kaley Robins, all of whom graduated from PCHS in 2023.

“I’m extremely grateful for all the kind words that I have received,” Martinez said. “It would not have been possible without Aryn, Whitney and Kaley. Being able to make PCHS proud is an incredible honor.”

“These young ladies poured themselves into this production,” said John DuPont, AV teacher at PCHS. “Hannia brings an incredible work ethic to all of her stage and screen roles. She has been an excellent ambassador for an already outstanding group.”

More than 2,000 entries were submitted to NATAS regional chapters. Winning entries from the chapters were then submitted for consideration in the National SPA competition. Entries were judged by selected industry professionals and media academics. Hannia’s Southeast Award was the tenth Southeast Emmy received by PCHS since 2018. Her subsequent national bid was the fourth such nod.

“These young storytellers have not only demonstrated remarkable skill in their craft but have also embraced the power of media to express their unique perspectives,” said Dannielle Mannion, Education Chair of the NATA Foundation. “We commend the dedicated teachers and advisors who have nurtured these aspiring filmmakers and journalists, providing guidance and encouragement every step of the way. Together, they are shaping the future of our industry, and we are proud to celebrate their outstanding achievements.'

The film “278” was shown this past fall at the Georgia Film Festival, hosted by the University of North Georgia in Dahlonega. The film is available to view online at youtube.com/watch?v=eF Yo4B-FpGU.
