BCMS splits with Long Middle on 8th-grade recognition

CANEY BAY — Brantley County Middle School’s eighth-grade teams split with visiting Long County Middle School in the lone Southeast Georgia Middle School Athletic Conference of the week.

The Lady Herons knocked off the Lady Blue Tide 50-34 in the Monday, December 9 opener. Long Middle garnered the split with a 43-29 victory i the nightcap.

Brantley Middle honored its eighth-grade players between games.

Lady Herons .........50 Long Middle..........34 

Brantley Middle raced out to a 15-point first quarter lead and was never challenged in beating the Lady Blue Tide.

Chloe Johns and Anniston Bowers each reached double figures to lead the Lady Herons. Johns (three treys) scored a game-high 13 points with Bowers (three) adding 11 points.

BCMS built a 17-2 lead by the end of the opening stanza. Long Middle cut into the deficit outscoring the Lady Herons 12-8 in the second period to trail 25-14 at intermission.

Brantley Middle broke the game open in the third quarter outscoring the visitors 19-10 to open up a 44-24 advantage. Long Middle outscored the Lady Herons 10-6 in the final period.

Julia Miller (trey) was next in the scoring column for BCMS with nine points. Allie Gray and Grace Carver followed with six points and five points respectively. Chloe Drury, Raeleigh Gibson and Cailya Dixon netted two points apiece.

The Blue Tide pulled away from a five-point halftime lead outscoring Brantley Middle by 17 points in the third quarter to notch the win.

BCMS battled Long Middle to a 9-all stalemate in the opening period. The Blue Tide used a 12-7 scoring advantage in the second quarter to claim a 21-16 halftime lead.

The Blue Tide took control of the game in the third stanza outscoring Brantley Middle 19-2 to build a 40-18 cushion. The Herons put together a fourth quarter rally outpointing Long Middle 11-3.

Evan Delaney (three) and Payton Jackson led Brantley Middle with seven points apiece. Steven Cook netted six points with Kase Crews finishing with four. Alex Keen (trey) and Jacob Highsmith contributed three points and two points respectively.
