Eighth-ranked Ware County remained perfect on the season winning twice on the road escaping the second game in overtime.
The Lady Gators (7-0) dominated from the outset in beating homestanding Vidalia 60-43 Tuesday, December 3. Ware County followed with a 49-47 overtime decision against Glynn Academy in Brunswick.
The Lady Gators play three times this week. They played Tuesday, December 10 at Atkinson County followed by a Friday, December 13 road trip to face Valdosta. Glynn Academy visits Saturday, December 14 for a 6 p.m. tip.
No. 8 Lady Gators ..60 Vidalia ...................43 VIDALIA — Charlacia Jones led 10 players in the scoring column finishing with 13 points as Ware County knocked the Lady Indians.
Jones added a teamhigh nine rebounds and two steals.
The Lady Gators built a double-digit advantage in the opening eight minutes and carried a 29-point lead into the final period.
“We ran the floor well,” said head coach Mandy Ligenfelter. “Charlacia and Kyla (McKelvin) had good games.”
Leading 16-6 at the end of the opening stanza, Ware County used a 19-11 scoring advantage in the second quarter to build a 35-17 halftime cushion.
The Lady Gators outpointed Vidalia 19-8 in the third period extending their margin to 54-25. The Lady Indians outscored Ware County 18-6 over the final eight minutes to make the score a little more respectable.
Shardell Vickers (six rebounds) just missed reaching double figures finishing with nine points. McKelvin (team-highs with five steals and four assists) and Bailey Denton (two rebounds, two assists) each contributed seven points.
A’Treasure White (two rebounds) netted six points while Lydia Munford and Bre Hill (four rebounds, blocked shot) each scored five points.
Alexis McNeal (two rebounds, two assists, block) and Rhianna Mateyka (six rebounds, two steals, assist, block) bagged three points apiece. Molly Smith chipped in two points.
No. 8 Lady Gators ..49 Glynn Acad. .....43, OT BRUNSWICK — Ware County battled back from a 10-point deficit entering the final period outscoring the Lady Red Terrors 2614 in the fourth quarter and overtime for the win.
“Our girls are relentless,” said Holland. “We rallied back from being down by 10.”
Trailing 33-23 with eight minutes to play, the Lady Gators outpointed Glynn Academy 17-7 in the final stanza to force overtime with the scored tied at 40-apiece. Ware County outscored the Lady Terrors 9-7 in the extra session with Jones knocking down the gamewinner off a McNeal pass.
Jones led the Lady Gators with a double-double scoring a team-high 15 points and pulling down a team-high 12 rebounds.
Ware County built a 1310 advantage in the first quarter. The Lady Gators struggled over the middle two periods starting with a 12-4 second stanza scoring advantage for Glynn Academy.
The Lady Terrors doubled their 22-17 halftime advantage outpointing Ware County 11-6 in the third quarter in building a 33-23 lead.
Denton spurred the fourth quarter comeback nailing three long-distance shots for nine points. McNeal (teamhigh four assists, two steals, block) and Vickers (five rebounds) followed with eight and seven points respectively.
Mateyka (five rebounds, two steals) chipped in six points. McKelvin (four rebounds, three steals, two assists) netted two free throws in overtime to tie the game for her only points. Munford also contributed two points.
