New 911 center gets the go ahead

Commissioners gave the green light to move forward with planning for a new 911 center in 2025.

The board agreed to begin looking for land and building designs, cost estimates and funding sources for the new facility.

“We need to (do some planning and) get some hard numbers,” said Fourth District Commissioner David Lowman.

The need for a new 911 center was first discussed in July during a meeting of the 911 advisory committee.

Public safety director Blake James said at the time the county’s current 911 dispatch center on Pierce Industrial Boulevard is unsecure and the building is dilapidated.

There is no time frame on construction for or even a location for the new center.

Commission chairman Neal Bennett said this is a “very preliminary” first step in the process.
