Nahunta announces a slight increase to water, trash bill

City receives ’23 Public Water System Quality Award

The Nahunta City Council was awarded a special honor during Monday night’s meeting December meeting.

City Manager Tom Wirth told council members they had received the 2023 Public Water System Quality Award.

There have been issues with the water system in the city, but Wirth spoke on the increased measures taken to ensure improvement.

“We’ve got more valves in and more things we can isolate,” Wirth said.

The city manager also said the more the city can isolate problems, the less issues the city will face in that area.

There were also two new employees hired by the council. they were introduced to the governing body.

Dylan Hodges will be working for Public Works and Jennifer Ryan will be the new administrative assistant for the Nahunta Police Department.

The council voted to increase sanitation beginning January 2025.

With the CPI (Consumer Price Index) contract the Council has, the City will be seeing a 5.1 increase starting January 2025.

The current prices for residential areas is $14.48 and $19.90 for commercial use. Once the increase goes into effect in January, the new residential price will be $15.22 and the new commercial price will be $20.91.

This will also apply to trash use, which will go up 74 cents for residential use and $1.01 for commercial.

Police Chief Brad Todd gave the monthly report for the police department reporting to the council there were 245 E911 calls, 143 traffic stops, 81 citations written, 62 warnings issued, seven incident reports filed, five accident reports filed, six arrests made and eight warrants taken out.

For the Public Works Department Report, Wirth said there were 456 work orders.

He also mentioned the 2022 CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) is wrapping up. They are down to doing concrete and asphalt work and water lines have been tied on.

Wirth was confident that the entire work will be finished this month.

“We’re hoping to be done by the 10th of this month,” Wirth said.

The plant is also moving along with the loan closing set to take place Wednesday, December 11 and then go into grant funding.

The next Nahunta City Council meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 5 at 7 p.m.
