PCHS Bear Facts

This week’s PCHS Bear Facts is a listing of hot topics for the week spanning December 21-27.

Welcome to the first full day of Christmas break! Hats off to everyone for a successful fall semester.

Take a bow, Mrs. Diane Griffis and Ms. Melissa Smith, for being named winners of the door decorating contest. Thanks to all the teachers who participated for spreading Christmas cheer!

We also salute PCHS Coach Swane Morris, who was named as a Georgia Class 2A Assistant Coach of the Year by Parker Resources. For most of the 2022 season, PCHS ranked among the state’s top defenses in points allowed per game, including a shutout of Berrien in round two of the playoffs. PCHS finished the season 11-2 overall, achieving an in-season ranking of #2 in the polls.

Meanwhile, the final football rankings for 2022 have been released by the GHSF Daily, and PCHS finished with a composite ranking of #6 in class AA. The highest postseason vote was a #4 placement by Max Preps.

Hats off to those Bears who received awards at the 912 Sports Magazine 2022 Football Awards Show. D.J. Bell was named as the Walker Jones Most Valuable Player for 2022 while Jonah Allen received Special Teams Player of the Year honors. Henry Peagler (offense) and Carson Sloan (defense) were named as PCHS Players of the Year. You can watch the awards show on demand at the following link: https://youtu.be/MfJqRL8lCnQ.

Congratulations to the PCHS swim team on their results at the December 15 meet at the Waycross YMCA. Overall, the PCHS women’s team finished 4th while the PCHS men’s team finished in 3rd place.

In the 200-yard men’s medley, the men’s team of Rowan McCrea, Aiden Vergara, Tristen Carlo and Conner Shipes took 3rd place. The women’s team of Shianne Mullis, Jacey Ryals, Jasmine Sergent and Emma Dyal finished in 2nd place. On the 200-yard Free relay, both the men and women slugged it out for 3rd place finishes. The men’s relay included Tristen Carlo, Corbin Hunzeker, Conner Shipes and Aiden Vergara, while Emma Dyal, Devyn Ball, Shianne Mullis and Jacey Ryals held it down for the women.

Top individual finishes included Conner Shipes (3rd place, 200-yard Free), Jasmine Sergent (1st place, 50-yard Free and 2nd place, 200-yard Free), Aiden Vergara (1st place, 200-yard Individual Medley and 5th place, 100-yard fly). 

In the men’s 100-yard Free, Conner Shipes placed fifth with a new personal record and Corbin Hunzeker was right behind him in 6th place. Jacey Ryals set a new personal record in the 500 Free, taking 3rd place. Davis Dyal shaved seven seconds off of his 100-yard Breaststroke time, setting a new personal best and sealing a 5th place finish.

The Swim Bears are idle for the rest of December. They return to competition Wednesday, January 11, 2023. Competition begins at 4 p.m. at the Waycross YMCA. It’s the start of a four-meet home stand to end the regular season.

PCHS wrestling returns to the mats on Thursday, December 29, competing in the Brantley Bash Tournament. Competition begins at 9 a.m. at Brantley County High School

Bears and Lady Bears basketball is back on the court Friday, December 30 at Lanier County. JV boys tip off at 2 p.m. Varsity girls play at 3:30 with varsity boys at 5 p.m.

Classes will resume on Monday, January 9, 2023. Faculty will report for pre-planning on Wednesday, January 4.
