It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in downtown Waycross.

A three-member crew from the Downtown Waycross Development Authority (DWDA), led by Director Laura Dixon, was working hard Friday November 15 assembling the the festive holiday tree under a crisp blue sky.

Waycross Public Works employees Chris Lee and Antonio White arrived in a cherry picker to place the star at the top of the tree.

Dixon and her crew, Ericka Pilling and Samantha Trunck, are responsible for the Christmas light magic which will soon twinkle in Doughboy and Phoenix Parks and behind the train depot.

“Behind the depot will be lit with Christmas displays including a walk through light tunnel and a walk through present,” said Dixon. “The caboose will be decorated and lit up for First Friday. You will be able to go through both parks and behind the depot to experience the Christmas lights.”

The city lights will be illuminated by Thanksgiving with the exception of the tree. The official tree lighting will be held Friday, December 6 at 7 p.m. in Phoenix Park.

First Friday will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In addition to the tree lighting, Satilla Advocacy Services is hosting a Dine and Dash 3K and Fun Run beginning at 6:30 p.m. DJ Scott Ray will provide music in Phoenix Park, The Okefenokee Heritage Center Performing Arts Guild will provide entertainment in Doughboy Park, and Saxophonist Joey Smith will perform on the caboose platform.

Vendors and food trucks will be available and Santa will make a special guest appearance with the Waycross Fire Department.
