Special to the WJH STATESBORO — Ware County senior and two-time defending Class 5A individual golf champion Rhett Carter is headed to Georgia Southern.
Carter signed his letter- of-intent with the Eagles’ golf program and head coach Carter Collins Wednesday, November 13 on the Ware County High School campus.
“I am very excited Trace will be joining our program in the Fall of 2025,” said Collins. “He is an outstanding young man and has had tremendous success in his junior and amateur golf career so far. Trace has an opportunity to make an immediate impact on our program in many areas.
“Anytime we can sign a south Georgia player with the accolades he has accumulated on the golf course and in the classroom, we have a lot to be excited about.”
Carter, a scholar athlete and member of the National Beta Club with a perfect 4.0 GPA, is the sixthranked player in Georgia by the website juniorgolfscoreboard. He is the 84th ranked player in the Class of 2025 nationally by the same outlet.
Carter tied for first at the 2024 Georgia PGA Junior Championship. He won the 2024 Jack Oliver Amateur Championship with a threeround score of seven-under to become the youngest winner in the event.
He placed sixth at the 2024 AJGA Atlanta Open, and 14th at both the 2024 Future Masters and 2024 GSGA State Junior Championship. Carter was third at the 2024 FJT Florida State, Major Championship. He is also a three-time winner of the David A. Wall Memorial Junior Championship.
Carter was the national runner-up at the 2022 Drive, Chip & Putt hosted by the Augusta National Golf Club.
Carter holds three course scoring records with a 61 at The Lakes Golf Course At Laura S Walker, 62 at the Quitman Country Club and a 67 at the Valdosta Country Club.
He is the son of Lauren and Rhett Carter and has two siblings, Coast and Sofie.
