Starling
FLAT TOP, W.Va. — Mr. Johnny LaGrant Starling, 78, of Flat Top, W.Va., died Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Lewis Gale Memorial Hospital in Salem, Va. after a brief illness.
Starling was born in Savannah, to the late Selwyn “S.L.” Starling and Ella Mae Fort Starling. Raised in Garden City, Ga., He was a 1964 graduate of Groves High School.
After high school, Starling studied at Brewton Parker College and Georgia Southern University. He received his license in Waste Management from Georgia Tech.
Starling moved to Waycross in 1967. He had lived in Oklahoma and South Carolina before settling in West Virginia in 1986.
Starling owned and operated Evergreen Environmental Protection Company from 1986 until his retirement in 2006. He was an avid race car fan, and had a passion for anything with an engine. Starling owned and operated dirt track race cars, loved Corvettes and Harley Davidson motorcycles. He was also an avid fisherman.
During his time in Waycross, Starling was a member of the Waycross Masonic Lodge 305 F&AM. He served his country as a member of the United States Air Force reserves.
Starling was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Vina Sue Starling of Flat Top, W.Va.; one son, Chad Starling and his wife, Jenny, of Blackshear; two grandchildren, Sydney Harvard and her husband, Jake, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Seth Starling and his wife, Copeland, of St. Simons Island; one brother, Randy Starling and his wife, Terri, of Perry, Ga.; one niece, Stacy Starling Moore and her husband, Ransom, of Perry; and numerous other relatives.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, November 8 in Greenlawn Cemetery.
