PCMS Bears basketball team defeats Waycross Middle, falls in tourney

The sixth/seventh grade boys basketball team defeated Waycross Middle School 47-38 (December 5).

Boys coach Maureen Brown reports that the team came out strong in the first half, playing pretty aggressive basketball.

“(In) the second half we were a little flat. (We) started out slow from the free throw line, but managed to shoot 56% from the line,” said Brown.

The Bears’ leading scorer was Dylan Johnson with 10 points.

Also scoring well were Noah Delaney and Gihad Taylor each with nine points, Beck Hodges had eight points, followed by Jack McClellan with seven points and Kentrell Mackey with  four points.

The team’s record is 5-2.

From there, the team headed into the tournament on Friday (Dec. 9), for the semi finals.

Unfortunately, a 51-50 loss to Waycross Middle at that Dec. 9 tournament ended the sixth/seventh grade team’s season.

“The game was a barn burner going down to the wire,” said Coach Brown.

PCMS got down 14 points, but rallied back to take the game to the buzzer.

The team missed two crucial free throws in the final seconds, then fouled Ware. Ware went to the free throw line and hit one free throw to go ahead of Pierce.

Johnson rebounded the ball and hit Delaney, but Delaney couldn’t hang on to the pass and the ball went out-of-bounds.

Leading scorer for the game and the Bears was Delaney with 20 points.

Other top scoreres were Johnson who had eight points, McClellan with seven points, Hodges with six points, Mackey with four points, Taylor with three points, Hodges with six points and Kendric Benton with two points.

PCMS finished the season with a 6-2 record for the regular season. Their overall record was 6-3.

“This group of young men was fun to coach and they are all so coachable. They will be tough again next year,” said Coach Brown. “This was a great group of young men. Their future is bright.”
