No. 4 Thomasville puts up 48 points in first period to beat Herons

THOMASVILLE – Fourthranked Thomasville scored on the opening play of the game setting off a scoring explosion in a 62-0 victory here over visiting Brantley County in Region 1-A play.

The Bulldogs (6-2 overall, 4-1 region) scored 48 points in the first quarter in blowing the game open.

“I told the guys to forget this one,” said Brantley County head coach David Shores. “We’ll just throw that tape away. It was like a dam broke at the start and a tidal wave crushed us. We just need to put this one behind us and look forward to playing Berrien this week.”

The opening snap set up the outcome. scrimmage, Thomasville’s Cam Hill (4-for-4, 183 yards, three touchdowns) found Si Wilson open for a 61yard touchdown 16 seconds into the game and the route was on. Camden Christie’s extra point gave the Bulldogs a quick 7-0 lead.

Brantley County fumbled after a great return to the Bulldogs’ 36 on the ensuing kickoff. Three plays later, Rex Schofill caught a 63-yard pass from Hill to extend the lead to 14-0 with 10:17 left in the opening quarter.

Following a defensive stop, Thomasville drove 61 yards in five plays with Levonte Cole’s five-yard run capping the drive for a 21-0 advantage with 7:27 left in the period.

Hill added to the Bulldogs lead with a 14-yard scramble for a score at the end of a four-play, 46-yard drive upping the margin to 28-0 with 4:24 left on the clock.

The wheels fell off in a span of 1:27 when Thomasville scored three defensive touchdowns off Heron turnovers.

Joe Douglas had a pick six on Brantley County’s ensuing possession to push the lead to 34-0 with 2:32 remaining.

Keymon Jefferson then got in the act with consecutive scoopand- scores. His first came with 1:24 left in the period with the second 19 seconds later giving the Bulldogs a 48-0 lead by the close of the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs added a touchdown in the second period with Ant Anderson taking a reception 43-yards to the house on the first snap of the possession to make it a 55-0 game 9:36 before intermission. Daniel Mateo converted the PAT.

The second half was played with a running clock via the “mercy rule.”

The only score came with 3:55 left in period three when Anderson raced 35 yards on the first play of the drive for the score with Eli Mateo’s PAT providing the last point of the night.

Brantley County managed 79 yards of offense in its 10 possessions. The Herons finished the game with four turnovers, three returned for scores, and punted the ball away five times.

Thomasville’s offense ran 16 plays for 307 yards and scored six times. The Bulldogs had three on-play scoring possessions.
