Ware Co. schools to resume Monday, October 21

The Ware County School System announced Thursday morning all schools will be closed to students through Friday, October 18.

The closure includes the system’s Fall Break, which is scheduled October 14-18. Students will return to classes Monday, October 21.

Ware County School System spokesperson Paige Coker said Thursday, October 3 the central office, Daffodil Pre-K, Waresboro Elementary, and Ware Middle remained without power following Hurricane Helene’s pass through the area late Thursday, September 26 and early Friday, September 27.

Coker said system personnel will focus their efforts on repairing damages to school facilities, inspection of kitchens and water supply for food preparation as required by USDA, and restocking food.

Coker said earlier Memorial Drive Elementary suffered the most significant damage from the storm. Center Elementary, Wacona Elementary and the high school also had slight damage.

The system didn’t respond Friday, October 4 to email questions if the closure would affect the instruction calendar, or the extent of damage at the four schools.

Coker reminded school stakeholders to continue to watch the system’s official communication channels for the most up-to-date information and any changes.

The system announced late Wednesday morning, September 25, schools would be closed the following two days as the storm approached with an anticipated return to school on Monday, September 30.

The closure was updated to include this entire week because of the storm’s impact.

Brantley County schools returned Thursday, October 3 with Pierce County resuming Tuesday, October 8.
