Mailman makes deliveries on route and to his family

Postal worker Sonny Shetty and his family were without power for six days. He and his wife have a three-month-old boy.

Shetty was prompted to travel to Brunswick for a generator, ice, fuel, and other supplies as soon after the storm as possible. “We were all huddled up in the living room for the air conditioning,” said Shetty. “We’re just taking it as it comes. We didn’t have water for about two days. We were having to do little bird baths with bottled water.” Shetty’s son is on formula and they were forced to sterilize the baby’s bottles with boiling water heated on a charcoal grill.

“We didn’t have cell service either for a few days.” For the next storm, he says, “We’re just going to hold tight and pray. That’s the only thing you can do. Our town’s just destroyed.”

Shetty says the Waycross Post Office went back to work Saturday, September 30.

“We’ve had to curtail mail delivery back by about two to three days in some areas,” he said. “While the curfew was in place, we couldn’t even get to the back ends of our routes. It’s been rough.

“We were in there with head lamps. We had generators powering little lights so we could case up the mail. We’ve been hard at it.”
