Waycross Mayor Michael-Angelo James took a moment from distributing ice and water Wednesday, October 2 to speak about the community stepping up following Hurricane Helene.
“We have noticed where trees have fallen on homes and destroyed them and, at the same time, we’ve seen the resilience of our community people working together to make things better for one another,” said the mayor. “Many of us are without power, including myself, but we are satisfied that our neighbors are doing well in spite of the situation.
“It’s good we’ve had so much help from GEMA (Georgia Emergency Management Agency). FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) has now opened up to us. People can go on FEMA.gov and get information and assistance.
“We appreciate all the help that has been given. Truly, this has been a time of teamwork. We thank each person who has come out, including our Public Works, our EMS, our fire department and our police department. Our city manager (Ulysses Rayford) has been amazing, as well as our commissioners.
“They’ve done tremendous work and of course our Business Integration and Information Technology Director Patrick Simmons has done a tremendous job getting information out and helping us share with the community what’s going on.
