Grateful for kind strangers

To the Editor:

In this day of civil unrest, seemingly all over the world, I am thankful to God for the random acts of kindness that I am shown on a regular basis as a senior citizen living in Waycross.

After checking out two bulky sized rugs at Wal-Mart recently, I remembered it was raining outside. A clerk nearby told me they had no large bags. Hence, I headed for the door and was stopped by the voice of a young woman: “Here, ma’am, I think we can make this work.”

She and her husband were checking out a cart full of items at a register across from me. Leaving him to finish their task, she grabbed four of the regular sized bags and proceeded to sack the ends of my rugs, leaving only a small portion of the middle exposed to the rain.

I stood there smiling all the while, grateful to have the protection for my purchase, but even more so for her thoughtfulness to a total stranger.

Also, how many times have I had drivers to smile and motion me on across a busy parking lot in the town — some white, some black, some brown. It matters not the color of our skin, but what’s in our hearts that counts.

Airport a true Waycross gem

To the Editor:

I became familiar with the Waycross Airport (KAYS) through an affiliation with a local Waycross church.

I had my aircraft christened at KAYS. I was surprised as to how little was known locally about KAYS airport.

The airport was/is bursting with potential. It is an “all weather” airport. I engaged the airport’s support in my mission to provide a “First Flight Opportunity” to as many local youths that desired the experience.

It’s become an annual event, now into its fourth year. I also have noticed some significant positive change in how the airport is maintained and its recognition by the aviation industry as a light aircraft gateway to Florida.

The service and amenities that have been added makes the airport a destination airport. Security is always an issue and the new fencing helps avoid some unwanted, unnecessary activity.

There are many municipalities that are envious of the service KAYS can provide aviation. In my prior life, I served as the Director of Aviation/Chief Pilot for a Fortune “100” company and a board member of National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) so I have a good comprehension of the kind of service desired by the business world.

A functioning, first class airport is one the first items reviewed when seeking a location for business expansion. The current management team has put in many enhancements. Let’s hope that airport management continues to get the support the airport deserves.
