WAYCROSS — Mrs. Barbara Jean Atkinson Lykens, 75, passed away Monday, August 26, 2024, at the Hospice House Satilla following a brief illness.

Mrs. Lykens was born in Riverside, N.J., to the late Charles Elsinger Atkinson and Marion Bauer Atkinson. She gradu ated from Women’s Medical College as a Registered Nurse and later graduated as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist from the Medical College of Pennsylvania.

Mrs. Lykens ended her career to focus on raising her children, but during that time she received a Bachelor of Healthcare Administration from Ottawa University. In her spare time, Barbara was very active with the Art Guild at the Okefenokee Heritage Center and the Salvation Army. She was also a former instructor at Okefenokee Technical College.

In addition to her parents she also was preceded in death by a sister, June Hartung.

Mrs. Lykens is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert Lykens of Waycross; three children, Elizabeth Lykens of Savannah, Sarah Lykens Porter (Curtis) of Durham, N.C., and Andrew Lykens (Courtney) of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; four grandchildren, Gabriel Lykens, Benjamin Lykens, Levi Porter, and Ella Porter; and a sister, Marilyn McClain (Tony) of Mason, Ohio.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorialization will be by cremation.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Okefenokee Heritage Center, 1460 N. Augusta Avenue Waycross, 31503 or to the Salvation Army of Waycross, 969 Tebeau Street, Waycross, 31501.
