City household debris collection starts

The City of Waycross is again offering citizens special collection of household debris at no charge.

This bi-annual service is available only to city residents. Public Works Director James Smart said the special collection held this spring yielded more than 51 tons of household waste.

The fall program began Friday, August 30 with the collection trailer at E.E. Moore Park. It will continue through the city’s five commission districts through the first week of October.

The trailer will be available for residents of District 1 through Sunday, September 8. It will move to Elizabeth Park in District 2 on September 9.

District 3 collection will be in Garlington Park September 16-22, District 4 in Monroe Park September 23-29 and District 5 in Oakland Cemetery near the water tower, September 30-October 6. All household items except tires, paints, solvents, tree removal debris, building materials, chemicals, pesticides, bricks and blocks can be placed in the trailer.

City residents do not have to wait until the trailer is in their district to deposit items. The special collection is for residents only, not for businesses.

Smart reminded residents they can continue to place up to five large items at the curb of their residence for pickup during the special citywide collection period.

Call Public Works at (912) 287-2955 to schedule a home pickup. The list of large item pickups is sent to Ryland Environmental, the city’s waste service, by noon every Thursday, Smart said.
