JEKYLL ISLAND — Caleb Wise’s 70th-place finish in a field of 196 runners here Saturday at the 29team Jekyll Island Cross-Country Invitational highlighted Ware County’s participation in the boys’ meet.
The Gators placed 24th in the field easily won by Walton High School. The Marietta school made it a sweep with the Lady Raiders running away from the 27-team field girls’ event.
Wise posted a season-best time of 18:36.10 to trail the winning time of host Glynn Academy’s Jackson Hunter, who finished with a time of 16:03.
The Lady Gators did not qualify for a team score with only four runners competing.
Walton High School easily won the boys’ title totaling 94 points placing four runners in the top seven spots. Finishing second thru 10th were Lakeside- Evans (146), May River (157), Hilton Head (166), Forsyth Central (209), Cherokee High (219), Decatur (228), Maynard H. Jackson (240), Central High (261) and Northside-Warner Robins (285).
Placing 11th thru 20th were host Glynn Academy (286), Woodward Academy (303), Westminister Schools of Augusta (356), Houston County (414), Providence Christian Academy (443), Northview (448), Kennesaw Mountain (457), Vidalia (464), Warner Robins (499) and Augusta Prep (527).
Rounding out the field were Locust Grove (537), Winder-Barrow (580), Camden County (597), Ware County (649), Upson-Lee (660), South Effingham (668), Brunswick (741), PCHS (767) and Statesboro (795).
Finishing behind Wise with season-best times were Brayten Hood (119th, 19:55.4), Da’Marion Zanders (137th, 20:31.70), Wesley Frye (160th, 22:01.10), Stephen Valdez (167th, 22:24.10) and Hayden Clement (182nd, 24:14.90).
Brandon Yepes placed
118th (19:52.80 - seasonbest time) to lead PCHS. Trailing Yepes were Dylan Hersey (155th, 21:37.40), James Alonso (161st,
22:04.40), Micah Bryant
(168th, 22:24.30 - seasonbest), Samuel Carrillo
(170th, 22:29.60 - seasonbest), Jeb Bradley (173rd,
22:45.10) and Breck Benton (175th, 22:59.40).
The Lady Gators were paced by the season-best time of Destiny Mendoza
(101st, 25:36). She was followed by Karla Calvillo (131st, 28:08.30), Miracle Patterson (139th,
29:16.50) and Madison Donlon (166th, 35:07.40), who all set season-best times.
Walton, which placed four runners in the top seven spots, finished with
33 points and was followed in the Top 10 by Hilton Head (S.C.; 104 points), Decatur (153), Northview (167), Cherokee
(180), May River (206), Maynard H. Jackson
(226), Glynn Academy
(229), South Effingham
(300) and Westminister Schools of Augusta (303).
