Survey seeks budget feedback

The City of Waycross is seeking the community’s understanding of the city government’s budget process in the form of a survey.

The Waycross City Commission has yet to approve a budget for Fiscal Year 2024-25 in two attempts. The city is operating on the FY 23-24 ledger through a continuing resolution passed June 29, two days before a new budget was to have started.

The survey was sent to email addresses in the City Hall database as well as offered on its Facebook page and through the new mywaycrossga app that can be downloaded for free at the Google or Apple app stores.

“It’s something we’ve wanted to do even before (budget),” said Patrick Simmons, Business Integration and Information Systems Director. “The budget is something current so we thought we’d try to get a gauge on the community’s understanding of the process and what we might do better with it and how to help them better understand it.”

The survey includes 15 questions, most multiple choice or short answer. There are some demographic information questions at the end.

“You can answer all or some,” Simmons said. “It’s an open format of a person’s choosing and it’s anonymous.”

Simmons said the city hopes to continue the survey targeting other topics of city importance in the coming months.

“Our goal is to try to have one every quarter,” he said.

The city will make another attempt at passing a new budget in October, City Manager Ulysses “Duke” Rayford said.
