Lady Bears split with Camden, Wayne

Pierce County split a pair on non-region games with the victory ending a mini two-game slide.

The Lady Bears (5-4) scored three runs in the ninth inning Tuesday, August 20 to beat Class 6A Camden County 5-2 in Kingsland. Class 4A thirdranked Wayne County notched an 11-2 decision Thursday, August 22 in Bearville.

PCHS traveled Monday (August 26) to Jeff Davis. The Lady Bears began region play Tuesday (August 27) hosting Tattnall County. They go to topranked Appling County Thursday, August 29 and will play at Coffee Thursday, September 5.

Pierce County will host Miller County (11 a.m.) and defending Class A DII state champion Lanier County (3 p.m.) Saturday, September 7.

KINGSLAND — Alyssa Crump’s two-out, two-run double broke a 2-all tie and Kaylee Figeuroa’s ensuing run-scoring double for an insurance run lifted PCHS past the Lady Wildcats.

Parker Sinclair was hit by the first pitch in the ninth inning. Zoe O’Berry dropped the next pitch down for a sacrifice moving Sinclair into scoring position.

Bella Delaney (3-for-5) legged out a two-out, infield hit putting runners on the corners. Delaney’s theft of second was followed by Crump’s (1-for-5) two-run double for a 4-2 lead. Figeuroa (1-for-3) lined a run-scoring double two pitches later upping the margin to 5-2.

Carley Sloan (9 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 6 K, 1 BB) set Camden County in order in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Bears broke a scoreless tie with a third inning run. Lanie Mai (1for-4) lined a one-out single, stole second and raced to third on Delaney’s infield hit. Crump lofted a sacrifice fly to left scoring Mai for the 1-0 lead.

PCHS doubled the margin to 2-0 in the sixth inning. A one-out walk to Figeuroa was followed by a two-base error on a ball hit by Taylor Tomlinson. Following a fielder’s choice play at the plate for the second out, Gracie Corbitt (2-for-4) lined a run-scoring single scoring Tomlinson.

Camden County scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score at 2-apiece. A two-out single kept the inning alive and a two-base error followed allowing the first run to score. An ensuing triple tied the score.

BEARVILLE — A tworun first inning gave the visiting Lady Yellow Jackets a lead they would not relinquish in beating PCHS.

A run-scoring error and a RBI single gave Wayne County a 2-0 lead in the first. The Lady Yellow Jackets scored three times in the fourth on a runscoring single, a steal of home and a two-out error.

The Lady Bears would score both of their runs in the bottom of the fourth. Corbitt (1-for-3) hit a firstpitch, leadoff double and moved to third when Tomlinson reached on a fielder’s choice.

Following Corbitt being retired at the plate on a fielder’s choice, Mai’s sacrifice fly plated Tomlinson who moved around to third after stealing second, with the first run. Delaney’s (1-for-4) infield hit scored Sloan (1-for-3) cutting the deficit to 5-2.

The Lady Yellow Jackets scored a run in the sixth on a two-out single for a 6-2 advantage. They plated five runs in the seventh sparked by a leadoff homer and four consecutive singles.

Figeuroa and Crump collected a hit apiece.
