WAYCROSS — Robert Wayne Fredrickson Futch, 91, passed away peacefully late Saturday, August 10, at Hospice Satilla in Waycross.

Born September 3, 1933 to Samuel Wayne Frederi ckson and Virg inia Orton Frederickson of Angola, Steuben County, Ind. At the death of his birth father in 1937, Futch and his mother relocated to Florida where his mother married L.G. Futch of Fernandina Beach, Fla. Subsequently, Robert’s name was changed to “Futch.”

Following graduation from Fernandina Beach High School in 1952, Futch was drafted into the United States Army and was caught up in the end of the Korean War. Futch continued to serve another 10 years during which time he studied under a special USAFI program with the University of Wisconsin to earn certificates and college credits.

Futch excelled in many military areas, but his favorite was scout dog platoon. He and his dog, “Flex,” conducted many demonstrations and made training films. In civilian life, Futch quickly became well known and respected for his vocational skills and managerial abilities in the pulp and paper industry. He retired from Canadian Pacific Forest Products in the 1990s.

Futch was preceded in death by his parents, many friends and classmates and daughter, Angela Futch Lesperance.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary B. Futch of Waycross; his sister, Peggy Futch Sanborn of Fernandina Beach; a host of nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. A true “Renaissance Man,” he will be missed.

A memorial service was held Friday, August 16 at American Legion Post 9, 4470 Highway 17 N, Brunswick.
