Mayors Leadership program picks James

Waycross Mayor Michael-Angelo James has been selected to participate in the inaugural Georgia Mayors Leadership Academy.

Dr. James, the 66th Mayor of Waycross, will be a part of the program Wednesday-Friday, August 28-30 at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education at the University of Georgia in Athens. He is in his second term as Mayor of Waycross.

The academy, the first of its kind in the state, is a collaborative initiat ive offered by the Georgia Mun icipal Association and the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government through the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute. The program is specifically tailored to address the unique roles and challenges faced by mayors, providing an immersive learning experience designed to help them not only survive but thrive in their leadership positions.

Over the course of three days, participating mayors will engage in interactive sessions led by renowned national speakers and seasoned mayors. These sessions will cover a wide range of topics, including cultivating relationships, responding effectively during crises, advancing community engagement, and much more.

By the end of the threeday academy, mayors will be equipped to:

• Understand their roles as convenors, collaborators, consensus builders, and advocates;

• Build and maintain effective relationships;

• Respond effectively during crises;

• Organize opportunities for community building; • Differentiate between technical and adaptive challenges;

• Develop strategies for leading significant change initiatives;

• Recognize the impact they can have on their communities.
