The Waycross Police Department reminds all motorists to use caution in and around school zones with Monday’s start of classes for the 2024-25 school year.

Speed limit is 15 mph in school zones when students are present.

“One of our highest priorities is to ensure safety on our roadways, particularly in our school zones, where traffic is congested and children may be crossing the street,” Chief Tommy Cox said. “The number one action we can do is slow down.”

Each year approximately 25,000 children are injured in the country’s school zones because of speeding vehicles or distracted drivers, WPD released in a video reminder on its Facebook page about the start of school.

Of those 25,000 , about 100 result in fatalities, according to the video.

Motorists also are reminded to stop for a school bus that’s dropping off or picking up children whether you’re behind or in the oncoming lane.
