Waycross officials move meetings

The Waycross City Commission meetings scheduled Monday-Tuesday, August 5-6 will now be held Monday-Tuesday, August 12-13, City Manager Ulysses Rayford said.

Monday’s planning and information session and Tuesday’s first bi-monthly meeting of August were moved with Monday’s closure of City Hall and a late reopening Tuesday with the expected arrival of the remnants of Hurricane Debby in the overnight hours of Monday-Tuesday.

Mayor Michael-Angelo James issued a proclamation Sunday declaring a state of emergency early in the week concerning the city.

Mayor James said the muncipal courtroom in the Waycross Police Department building at 512 Oak Street and the C.C. McCray City Auditorium, 865 Pendleton Street, would be available for those who experienced loss of power or damage at their homes from the storm.

The Public Works Department prioritized its crews Monday, Tuesday and today (Wednesday, August 7) to address street and storm drain issues, the city said. Waycross Police and Fire Department personnel were also on duty Monday and Tuesday.

A small agenda was ahead for commissioners at Monday’s work session, according to its release Friday afternoon by City Clerk Jackie Powell. The chief item of discussion was a resolution for Tuesday’s agenda on the Fiscal Year 2024-25 budget.

Waycross has been operating on its FY23-24 ledger under a continuing resolution passed June 29 when commissioners couldn’t reach an agreement on Rayford’s new budget proposal by the June 30 deadline.

Rayford reintroduced the budget the middle of last month and the two required public hearings were held in advance of another vote.

Like the city, Ware County announced Sunday its administrative offices would be closed Monday, and later added a Tuesday closure. The county was scheduled to reopen with normal operating hours today.
