Mayor reappointed to council

Waycross Mayor Michael-Angelo James has been reappointed to the Georgia Muncipal Association Legislative Policy Council for the 2024-2025 year.

Mayor James was first appointed to the body’s one-year term in 2021.

GMA created the Legislative Policy Council (LPC) in 2002. The LPC’s responsibilities are year-round, including fall preparation for the legislative session, engagement through the session, and post-session revisions to the GMA policies during spring meetings and the annual convention.

GMA’s elected leadership, policy committee structure, and district outreach programs are important components of the Council.

The LPC is the focal point for GMA’s legislative policy effort, combining the efforts and input of GMA’s six standing policy committees with its district outreach efforts. The LPC is charged with annually preparing a proposed set of Legislative Policies for consideration at the Annual Convention in Savannah.

Following the policy committee meetings at Convention, the LPC makes such further refinements to the Legislative Platform as it deems necessary and then presents the policies to the membership for approval at the annual business meeting. Any changes subsequent to the Convention must be approved by the GMA Board of Directors.

During the legislative session, the LPC provides real-time feedback and advice on critical policy issues at the Capitol. Members testify before committees on specific legislation. They also maintain close contact with legislators in and out of session.
