Hoboken trash rates increasing January

HOBOKEN — Hoboken residents will see a 5.1 percent increase in the garbage rate beginning January 2025.

The announcement came during the Tuesday, November 5 meeting of the Hoboken City Council.

Republic, who has the contract with the City of Hoboken, raised its rates $5 in 2024 from $12 to $17. This increase will add about 60 cents a customers.

Councilman Kenny Jordan asked how long the City of Hoboken was locked into a contract.

“We just renewed it this year,” answered City Clerk Linda Henderson. “That is unless we give give them 90 days notice. It cost us $16.40 so we’re only making 60 cents.

“That has nothing to do with administrative costs, dealing and collecting. We’re going to probably have to go up again the first of the year to at least break even.

“When we got quotes last year, the other people were higher and and they didn’t offer the big bin service.”

Mayor Pro-tem made the motion for the garbage rate. Councilman Jimmy Ray made the second. It passed unanimously.

Neither Police Chief Jonathan McMillan nor Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ricky Floyd were present for their monthly reports.

“We need to be patrolling Church Street because they are flying down it every morning,” said Councilman Greg Buie. “People are flying over the speed bumps. We need to put a camera over there and they’ll slow down.”

Mayor Joey Crews gave the report for the fire department that included three accidents, one vehicle fire, one woods fire, four structure fires, one alarm and three ambulances needed.

The mayor said is going to be a city-wide appreciation reception for Chief McMillan set for Saturday, November 23 from 4 p.m.-6 p.m., at the Community Center. McMillan will be leaving to assume the seat of Probate Judge.

The City of Hoboken Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday, December 14 starting at 6 p.m.
