Pioneer Day at refuge Nov. 23

The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, 2700 Suwannee Canal Road, Folkston, holds its annual Pioneer Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, November 23.

All activities will take place at the Chesser Island Homestead along the Swamp Island Drive.

The event brings the community and refuge staff together for a fun-filled day packed with traditional swamp living demonstrations such as saw palmetto broom making, sugarcane grinding and boiling. In addition to the demonstrations and activities for children, visitors can explore the homestead property and tour the Chesser house.

For more information call (912) 496-7836 or visit the refuge website at www.fws.gov/refuge/okefenokee.
