BCHS opens season with road sweep at Atkinson

PEARSON — Brantley County tipped off its season with a road sweep here Friday night against homestanding Atkinson County.

The Lady Herons opened with a 64-40 decision over the Lady Rebels in the November 15 opener. The Herons also opened with a 24-point victory in the nightcap notching a 54-30 victory over the Rebels.

BCHS traveled Tuesday night (November 19) to Folkston to face Charlton County. Brantley County will host Appling County Thursday night, November 21, with a 6 p.m. tip.

Atkinson County visits Tuesday, November 26 to wrap up the season series in the lone matchup of the week. BCHS returns to action Tuesday, December 3 with a date at Appling County wrapping up the non-region series. That’s followed by a Thursday, December 5 date at Wayne County.

Lady Herons..................64 Atkinson County............40 Ayaniah Davenport scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for a double- double leading 10 players in the scoring column against Atkinson County.

The Lady Herons raced out to a 16-4 first quarter lead. Atco sliced four points off the deficit in the second stanza outscoring the visitors 15-11 to get to within 27-19 at intermission.

The scoring quickened in the third period with Brantley County outscoring the Lady Rebels 22-14 to double its lead to 49-33. The Lady Herons outpointed Atkinson County 15-7 in the final quarter.

Davenport added two steals and an assist to her stat line. She was followed by Summer Colley (two steals, two rebounds) and Ella Highsmith (seven rebounds) with nine points each.

Abbie Lee (five steals, four rebounds, two assists) was next with eight points. Kimora Mincey (seven rebounds, two steals) and Julie Carter (three assists, three steals, rebound) contributed six points and five points respectively.

Edie Lowther (five rebounds) chipped in four points with Riana Dennard (two steals, rebound) finishing with three points. Kirsten Smith (two steals, rebound) and Brodie Allen (steal, assist) bagged two points apiece.

Herons ..........................54 Atkinson County............30 Patrick O’Quinn poured in a game-high 25 points leading the Herons past Atkinson County.

O’Quinn added a team-high six steals and a team-high five assists to go along with six rebounds.

“We got into foul trouble early and it gave us a chance to get some younger guys some experience,” said head coach Tripp Herrin. “Patrick shot it well and had a good night all around. Rebounding is a problem for us right now. We have to get more physical in a hurry.”

Brantley County led just 13-11 when the opening eight minutes expired. A 16-4 run during the second period pushed the Herons lead out to 29-15 at intermission.

BCHS continued to add to its margin in the third quarter outscoring the Rebels 16-9 in opening up a 45-24 lead. The Herons clipped Atco 9-6 over the final eight minutes.

Tucker O’Quinn (five assists) joined his brother in double figures finishing with 12 points. Elias Esser and Courtlon Fuller (team-high 10 rebounds) each finished with six points. Carson Jacobs and Daesean Hutcherson contributed three points and two points respectively.
