Sears, Edwards named Grand Champions in Perry

PERRY — Emersynn Sears and Lauryn Edwards earned Grand Champion status here at the Georgia National Fair.

Sears captured the prestigious honor Friday, October 11. She was second in the February Duroc class and Grand Champion with her February Yorkshire. Earlier in the morning, Sears finished third in 3rd-4th grade showmanship.

Edwards exhibited the Grand Champion Low-Percentage Chi heifer Saturday, October 12.

Brantley County High School and Middle School FFA Chapters and 4-H students participated at the Georgia National Fair Thursday, October 3 through Saturday, October 5, and again Thursday, October 10 through Sunday, October 13.

Students exhibited cattle and swine projects at the fair resulting in quite a few ribbons being brought back to Brantley County.

During the first weekend students from across the state exhibited their beef and goat projects against some of the best livestock in the country.

Edwards exhibited her heifer Friday, October 4 in llth-Grade Showmanship finishing sixth. In the Low-Percentage Chi heifer class, she was left standing in second place as her calf s flush mate was named Grand Champion.

The Brantley County Show team participated October 10 in the Swine show and Open Beef Cattle show.

Kirsten Smith started things off in llth-grade showmanship driving her crossbred market gilt to third-place Thursday evening. Then, Friday morning Emersynn Sears finished 3rd in 3rd & 4th grade showmanship, Adeline Crews placed 10th in 1st-2nd grade showmanship with Edwards finishing second in 11th-grade beef showmanship Friday. Ellie Crews was sixth in 7th grade beef showmanship The Market Hog show was held Saturday, October 12. Tuff Lowther, a crowd favorite, finished 10th, one spot behind Rayland Justice.

Adeline Crews was 10th in her market barrow class. Over in the beef cattle show, the Crews girls — Stephen and Emily Crews — started the day with a bang. Ellie was sixth in her class of Commercial heifers and Cora was second in Purebred Charolais Heifer class.

The weekend wasn’t over until late Sunday afternoon, October 13 as the show team exhibited their Georgia-Bred pigs.

Kibrey Smith was the top placer the last day. She was third in the Commercial gilt class. Kirsten Smith placed sixth with her market gilt, Lowther was eighth in market barrow class and Justice was ninth.

The Show team will have several members participating at the Waycross fair to finish the season. Others exhibited at the Northeast Florida Fair where Lowther exhibited the record-selling pig at $20 a pound while Edwards exhibited the Supreme Champion Heifer.

Sears traveled to the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City, Mo., exhibiting her swine projects.

Adeline Crews was 10th in 2nd grade Showmanship and 10th in Market class color.
