A representative from Georgia's Coastal Resources Division spoke to the Nahunta City Council informing the council the City of Nahunta is eligible for funding through grants at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Coastal Resources Division Program Manager Jan MacKinnon, Program Manager discussed the Coastal Incentive Grant during the September 3 meeting. The Grant is a competitive pass-through program made possible by a grant to the Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The grant is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration through Congressional allocation pursuant to the Coastal Zone Management Act.
Nahunta is part of the Coastal Zone Management Program, which is housed with the Georgia DNR Coastal Division in Brunswick. The program has been in place for 26 years.
The grants may be awarded to qualified county and municipal governments, regional commissions, state-affiliated research or educational institutions or state agencies (except DNR), provided the project takes place entirely within the 11 Coastal counties CRD serves.
The maximum award amount is $80,000 per year for a total of two years.
MacKinnon encouraged the Council to apply for a grant for any of their funding needs. She also mentioned the CRD has a very specific goal to reach.
“Our mission is to balance economic development,” MacKinnon said. “We also want to protect the natural, cultural, historic and recreational resources.”
Pre-applications are due in December with full applications due in February of each year.
The CRD wants to sit down and talk with the council about their ideas and make those as strong as proposals as they can.
