The City of Nahunta council discussed/ voted on the following agenda times during the Tuesday, September 3 monthly meeting.
• Georgia Reads Day proclamation: The council approved the Georgia Reads Day proclamation issued by Governor Brian Kemp. The Governor sent a proclamation to have September 30, 2024 marked as Georgia Reads Day for children.
Literacy is not just an educational issue, but an economic one. In 2023, 61 percent of fourth graders in Georgia did not read proficiently and children who are readers by the end of third grade are four times more likely to graduate from high school.
• Committee for Nahunta’s 100year anniversary: The council made a motion to assemble a committee for Nahunta’s 100-year anniversary.
The centennial is Monday, July 28, 2025. The xouncil wants to put together a committee to do some activities such as fireworks and a parade. Other activities suggested included having vendors and a bounce house.
• New traffic camera bank account: The council adopted a resolution for a new bank account for a new traffic camera. They will be opening that account through Southeastern Bank.
The new camera will be laser driven. It will take four pictures of a car as well as the tag. If the imagery is blurry, the ticket will be thrown out. The camera can also calculate the exact day and time that any given violation occurs.
• Nahunta Police Department: Police Chief Brad Todd gave council members the numbers for the month of August.
The NP made 181 traffic stops, wrote 72 traffic camera citations, issued 109 warnings, filed 12 incident reports, worked four traffic crashes, made nine arrests with 11 arrest warrants were issued.
Chief Todd reported an extraordinary amount of violations in the county.
“Over a five-day period, there were over 450 violations,” the chief said.
There was also one incident where a driver of a blue Mustang was going 92 mph in a 35 mph school zone. One officer was hit by a car while headed south on Hwy. 301.
The police department will be sending out a series of warnings to citizens in the area about speeding beginning Monday, September 16.
