WAYCROSS — A 17-year-old has been arrested and charged in the murder of a 16-year-old, according to Brantley County Sheriff Len Davis.
Cody Oglesby, a junior at Brantley County High School, died Thursday afternoon from his gunshot wound.
Trenton Bennett, 17, was arrested and charged in Oglesby’s death.
“We (Brantley County Sheriff’s Office) responded to a shooting (3:36 p.m.) on Dee Gee Trail,” said Davis. “We found the deceased. A person was taken into custody a short time later.”
Davis said Tuesday morning (September 3) the case is still under investigation. He is not releasing any other details.
The shooting took place in western Brantley County near Waycross off Central Avenue.
A statement was released by Brantley County High School faculty on Facebook.
“The Brantley County High School family lost such a bright soul with so much potential this week,” the post read. “Cody Oglesby only grew more lovable the more time you knew him and had so many faculty, staff, and friends rooting for his goals and success at BCHS.
“Just this week he had celebrated a step toward his graduation goals and was making sure to share the good news with some of his teachers who had supported and encouraged him along the journey.
“For those who knew him best, Cody was loyal, loving, and so proud of his growing accomplishments. To his friends, he was known to have a heart of gold and an excitement to share all the good moments and milestones that life brought his way. Cody, you will be missed at BCHS! Please join us in sending positive thoughts, care, and prayers to his family and friends.”

Oglesby was born in Waycross to Augusta Oglesby and was an active junior at Brantley County High School. He enjoyed eating good food, singing, a game of basketball with his friends, and was becoming a pretty good fornite gamer.
Oglesby is survived by his mother, Augusta Oglesby of Waycross; father, Jeramie Goodman of Jesup; four siblings, Allison Silva of Waycross, Brandon Silva of Waycross, Wesley Goodman of Waycross and Trevor Goodman of Waycross; maternal grandparents, Wayne and Betty Oglesby of Waycross; aunts and uncles, Kelli Oglesby of Nahunta, Wayne Oglesby, Jr. and wife, Heather, of Waycross and Monica Waters of Waycross; numerous cousins and other relatives.
A funeral service was held Monday, September 2, 2024 in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial followed in Kettle Creek Cemetery.
