City of Nahunta to use rollback in setting millage

NAHUNTA — Nahunta’s governing body will use the rollback numbers in setting the millage rate.

During the Monday, August 12 meeting, held a week later because of the passage of Tropical Storm Debby across southeast Georgia, city council members adhered to the recommendation of City Clerk Angel Wirth to set the millage rate at 11.494.

The council has rolled back the millage rate in each of the last three years after settling at 11.75 in 2020 and 2021.

This years 11.494 mill is down from 11.549 in 2023, which dropped from 11.556 in 2022.

The City of Nahunta will hold two public meetings Wednesday, August 28 regarding the setting of the millage rate. The first hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m., with the second slated for 6 p.m.

The council will follow with a meeting at 6:30 p.m., for its adoption.

The City also heard the second reading of the Code of the City of Nahunta Ordinance. Councilwoman Crystal Johns made the motion to approve ordinance 00124, Code for the City of Nahunta. Mayor Pro-tem Bruce Davis gave the second with the motion passing 3-0.

Andrew Altman was the other council member present. Councilwoman Deloise McFadden was unable to attend.

Police Chief Brad Todd updated council members on the numbers for the Nahunta Police Department. The chief said his department responded to 391 E911 calls, made 250 traffic stops issuing 87 tickets with 163 warnings.

The department filed 22 incident reports, four accident reports, made six arrest and took out four warrants.

City Manager Tom Wirth reported Public Works completed 364 work orders. He also said the City of Nahunta faired pretty well with Tropical Storm Debby.
