Cross-country teams run at Jeff Davis event

HAZLEHURST — Brantley County High School’s cross-country program kicked off its 2024 season here Saturday participating in the Peach State Preview hosted by Jeff Davis.

The Herons placed 14th in the 15team event while the Lady Herons did not field a full team (five runners) carrying only four participants.

Jones County easily won the boys’ event with 32 points placing all five runners inside the Top 10 positions. The Greyhounds were followed by Northside-Warner Robins (82), Veterans (90), Glynn Academy (95), host Jeff Davis (154), Vidalia (173), Warner Robins (177), Coffee (202), Toombs County (266), Berrien (276), Wayne County (317), PCHS (349), Appling County (373), Brantley County (389) and Brunswick (406).

Jones County’s Lady Greyhounds made it a clean sweep scoring 30 points in the 10-team girls’ event. They were followed by host Jeff Davis (48), Glynn Academy (90), Veterans (145), Brunswick (151), Coffee (159), Vidalia (163), Northside-Warner Robins (228), Toombs County (258), Appling County (267), Wayne County (302) and Warner Robins (326).

Klara Barnes and Avery Crews led the Lady Herons placing 46th and 47th respectively. Barnes posted a time of 26:23.90 with Crews clocked at 26:26.10. The winning time was 19:42.30.

Linzi Parker placed 72nd with a time of 28:39.20 while Kaycee Johnson finished 109th with a time of 35:25.

The Herons were paced by Max Herrin’s time of 19:53.20 placing 58th. The winning time was 15:44.70.

Herrin was followed by Brady Chambless (72nd; 20:31.40), Steven Roberson (108th; 21:56.50), Evinrude Green (117th; 22:43.60) and Carter Lentz (156th; 26:03.20).

BCHS competed Tuesday (August 20) at East Laurens in the only event until traveling Thursday, September 5 to Ware County.
